Abstract: We conducted a field study to examine how a Participation Awareness Tool (PAT) influences the regulation of participation during a group project. The PAT had two parts, a reporting part in which students were asked to self-assess their participation, and a visualization part in which students were presented with a graph representing the distribution of participation together with an indicator of the level of inequality in participation. Students used the PAT for four weeks. Results support a positive effect of the tool. Students benefit more from the visualization than from the self-assessment activity. The influence of the visualization on the regulation of participation seems to be more important for the most active students. Its influence on the behavior of less active students depends on when it is introduced during collaboration. Visualization motivates them to make more effort when it is introduced late. These results offer new possibilities for future research.
