Abstract: We implemented an afterschool STEM program for Chin youth to engage them in critical science literacy while using their full linguistic repertoires. For the present study, we conducted a grounded theory analysis of 24 interviews from this project to reveal how translanguaging supported epistemic agency in this space. Our findings from four youths’ narratives suggest that the youth integrated translanguaging as an extension of their everyday discursive practices to foster shared epistemic agency among their peers. In addition, we identified structures from their school science classrooms that inhibited translanguaging and stunted their epistemic agency.
