Abstract: This study investigates how playwriting supports agency as an outcome of participation among a group of elementary school students. We engaged in a multimodal linguistic analysis of student agency, analyzing youth interview transcripts and creative artifacts to better understand students’ sense of intentionality, autonomy, and creative freedom within arts practices. This paper offers possibilities for a more comprehensive study of student agency in the arts by introducing a multimodal linguistic approach.
