We surveyed 68 individuals who identified as or worked or studied in professional roles related to educational data scientists, followed by semi-structured interviews with key participants. Findings show that educational data scientists from our sample have more confidence with the mathematical and substantive aspects of their work (compared to programming) and that beliefs about what educational data science is has a bearing upon who identifies with this new role and context for teaching and learning.en_US
